Epithalon is a tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, synthesized to mimic the effects of the pineal gland hormone complex. It was first identified in research from Vladimir Khavinson's laboratory in Russia as a regulator of telomerase activity and circadian-rhythm function. Epithalon is not FDA-approved as a drug in the United States and remains an experimental research compound.
On July 23–24, 2026, the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted to recommend Epithalon for inclusion on the FDA's Section 503A Bulk Drug Substances List—the list of substances deemed safe and eligible for use in compounded medications by licensed pharmacies. This represents a shift: previously, Epithalon was not approved for compounding use in the U.S., but the PCAC's favorable vote recommends that this restriction be lifted.
The committee's recommendation is non-binding; the FDA must issue a final ruling, but the vote reflects growing recognition of the peptide's research interest and relative safety profile in preclinical studies.
Critical point: Much of the published evidence for Epithalon comes from Russian research conducted decades ago (1980s–2000s) and has not been independently replicated in the West by major academic institutions or published in high-impact, English-language journals. The strongest human evidence—if any—remains limited to small observational studies or uncontrolled trials.
As of 2026, there is not decisive proof that Epithalon safely or reliably extends human lifespan or even measurably lengthens telomeres in humans. The regulatory pathway in the U.S. now allows compounding for research and off-label use, but this does not imply efficacy, only that it is deemed safe enough not to pose significant risks if compounded and used as directed.
