Research peptides are not illegal in the laboratory. But they are banned in sport. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) classifies dozens of common research peptides β BPC-157, TB-500, GHK-Cu, CJC-1295, ipamorelin, and many others β as prohibited substances under its 2026 list, effective January 1, 2026. This article explains WADA's classification system, which peptides are banned, and why the distinction between research use and sport use matters.
WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) publishes an annual Prohibited List that outlines substances and methods banned in competitive sport. The list is organized by category and mechanism, from performance-enhancing drugs to substances with abuse potential. Athletes competing at any international-governed event (Olympic Games, World Championships, professional leagues that follow WADA code) must comply.
Key rule: Strict liability β athletes are responsible for any prohibited substance found in their system, regardless of intent, knowledge, or how it got there. No exceptions.
WADA uses lettered codes (S0βS9, M1βM3) based on mechanism and class:
S0 β Non-approved substances
Any substance not currently approved by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use and not otherwise addressed elsewhere on the list. This catches research peptides that have no human therapeutic approval.
S2 β Peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics
Includes growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), gonadotropins (FSH, LH), and peptide-hormone analogs. Many research peptides fall here.
S4 β Metabolic modulators
Substances that alter metabolic pathways, including GLP-1 receptor agonists (semaglutide, tirzepatide, retatrutide analogs) studied for metabolic research but flagged for abuse potential in endurance sports.
S0 (non-approved substances): BPC-157, KPV, and most research peptides β banned simply because they lack human therapeutic approval.
S2 (peptide hormones):
S4 (metabolic modulators): GLP-1 receptor agonists including semaglutide, tirzepatide, and retatrutide β all banned as metabolic modulators under abuse potential in endurance sports.
S0 substances are banned at all times, in and out of competition. Athletes can be tested any day, any time, at training facilities, competitions, or at home. A positive test for an S0 substance is a ban, period.
Detection challenges: Some peptides (BPC-157, SS-31, Epithalon) are difficult or impossible to detect by current anti-doping tests because they are small peptides and degrade rapidly. However, WADA's policy is not based on detectability β the ban applies regardless. The athlete bears the burden of proof that the substance was not used.
This is essential to understand: WADA's prohibition applies to athletes in organized sport. It does not apply to research, academic study, or private individuals outside of sport.
The confusion arises because research peptides are sold online to civilians under the label "research use only." That label is legally accurate for the laboratory context; it does not create an exemption from sports anti-doping rules if the purchaser is an athlete.
The 2026 Prohibited List, approved September 11, 2025, included further clarifications under S2 to help athletes identify prohibited peptide hormones. New examples were added to distinguish prohibited peptide analogs from legitimate therapeutics (e.g., insulin approved for diabetes is permitted; insulin-like growth factors are not).
The July 2026 FDA Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee votes on BPC-157, TB-500, and KPV did not change their WADA status β they remain prohibited.
